Family picture: outtakes and success

April 13, 2010

Oh my. I’ve written about this before. Since we haven’t taken a formal family photo since Asher was born, we decided it was high time to climb into color-coordinated outfits and SMILE! Plus, we wanted to chronicle our last spring among Austin’s famous bluebonnets.

We set the time for 7:30 a.m. and wondered if we were crazy to try and shuttle our entire family out the door, with hair combed and shirts tucked in, before the sun even crested.

But despite the trepidation, this was the best family photo session we’ve ever had.

Because it turns out 7 a.m. is, temperamentally, a great time for young children to shoot photos.

This was our first family photo shoot outside (we’ve only ever done them in a stuffy, JC Penney studio), and the weather was just lovely.

Running through those bluebonnets was just thrilling: A meadow of bright-blue flowers. Is there anything more exciting as a kid?

Well, maybe lollipops (and raisins for Asher) and the promise of donuts! popsicles! Whatever it takes to make you smile! We promised (and doled out) the moon. It was well worth it.

And so, despite the fact that Asher endured the entire thing with a messy diapers, I would say: success! (And the REAL photos, taken by someone who actually knows what they’re doing, look fantastic!)

And this fantastic dad, with his four boys…aren’t they a handsome bunch?

And once in a while, even I enjoy putting on some makeup.

    Absolutely beatuiful! LOVE THEM ALL!
When I took Evelyn’s one year old pictures, I was having to feed her in between every shot to be happy! It’s a hard age to take pictures of them but Asher looks great!

Thanks Meredith. Evelyn’s pictures were beautiful. And so were you!

Beautiful spot! And beautiful pictures! You have a very handsome family! You look lovely too! We are going to have our pictures taken next month by an outdoor photographer. I’m a little nervous, considering we’ll be doing it around 6pm to catch the western sun. My kids are usually getting wired and/or grumpy by then. We’ll see!

I love the blue bonnets; they are so pretty. You are brave for a 7:30 am shoot time, but it actually does make sense. No on is tired (except maybe mom and dad), and all your boys look like they are so happy to be outside. You look so beautiful in your picture with Asher! We just took pictures last Summer, so we’re good to go for atleast another 10 years! Just kidding but probably 2.

Jill: Oh I know, it had been two for us as well. A mother of four boys can understand the complexity behind orchestrating a family photo, right?

I love the blue in the flowers. And your scarf. Amen to outside photo sessions and good photographers! Can’t wait to see the finished product 🙂

Thanks Sheralie. The flowers are incredible, aren’t they? It’s such a uniquely Austin thing, all that blue. As for the scarf, I had my trepidations that it would clash, but I’m glad I wore it. It kind of dresses me up as the only non-boy in the group. Hmn.

Super cute Tiff! Can’t wait to see the rest of them. Such a cute family! The Blue Bonnets really are wonderful. I just love running errands to see how many patches I can spot.
